High Value Chemicals

The institute has developed chemical processes to produce a number of high-value chemicals from coconut oil, at the laboratory scale. These include glycerol, ethyl laurate, lauric acid, liquid and solid soaps, glycerol monolaurate and associated ethyl esters (myristate, stearate, oleate, etc). These processes have already attracted widespread attention from the private sector; the institute significantly helped one private sector company to develop processes to scale up the production of virgin coconut oil and to convert the related byproducts to soaps, detergents and feed (using the fibre components).
